'Marriage expenses' must be returned
( 2003-09-01 11:12) (China Daily)

A 37-year-old woman has been ordered to return US$190,000 to her 68-year-old fiance, who sued her for fraud following their break-up, reports Information Times.

The plaintiff, an Indonesian businessman, met the defendant, identified as Qiu, in Shenzhen in December 2001.

At their engagement in February 2002, he gave Qiu US$190,000 but signed a contract with her stating that the money was specifically for "marriage expenses".

Qiu broke up with the man via letter in July 2002 but did not return the money, part of which had already been used to buy an apartment.

The Luohu District People's Court ruled that the contract should be honoured, though Qiu argued she was the victim of a dishonest relationship - the man did not tell her he was married when they were dating.

The money must be returned since the marriage is not going to take place, said the court.
