Air crew stops man from suicide
( 2003-09-02 10:50) (China Daily)

A foreigner on flight CA933 from Paris to Beijing via Pudong Airport in Shanghai was prevented from taking his own life by cabin crew on Sunday, reports www.eastday.com.

Two and a half hours after take-off from Paris, a stewardess found the man sitting bare from the waist up in the last row of the economy section, trying to cut his belly open with a pair of scissors.

The man had been turned away together with a Chinese woman from the Paris airport due to passport problems. Responding to the astonished stewardess' call, Li Yu, a fellow steward, rushed to the man and tried to take the scissors away from him.

The man cried out in English, "I want to go back to Sri Lanka!" as he struggled with the steward.

Although Li was finally able to get hold of the scissors, the thwarted passenger later tried to bite his own tongue.

Upon seeing blood dripping down his chin, the cabin crew pried his mouth open and managed to force a tranquilizer down his throat through a tube.

The man gradually calmed down and was turned over to the Shanghai Frontier Defence Department at 1:40 pm on Sunday after the flight landed at Pudong International Airport.
