A farmer's life savings of 8,000 yuan (US$960) began disintegrating in the wall where he hid it six years ago, reports Beijing Morning Post.

Fang, a villager in Lezhi, Sichuan Province, withdrew the 8,000 yuan from his bank six years ago.

He wrapped the money up in plastic, pulled a brick out of a wall in his house, put the money inside and sealed it up.

But after a neighbour told him that one of her relatives had all of his personal savings hidden in his bed gnawed to pieces, Fang checked his own hiding place at once, only to discover the bills had begun to rot and stick together in clumps.

Moreover, some of the clumps collapsed into tiny pieces at a touch.

When the bank told him that only separated whole banknotes could be changed for new bills, Fang decided to try to find a specialist to help him separate the bills so that he could salvage at least half of his money.
