Fake work reports
( 2003-09-04 10:44) (China Daily HK Edition)

On the first day of the autumn semester, students hand in their social practice report. But how many of them actually did what they wrote on the form?

According to a China Daily survey, not many.

A recent online survey of over 200 people found that nearly half had lied on the report, though 86 per cent thought that such work experience was important.
Students who did the practice are in the minority, especially among freshmen and sophomores, said Xu Feng, a Xiamen University student.

The levels of cheating were, in part, caused by students not taking the work seriously. But the main reason they lied was because they found it difficult to actually get a job.

The lack of social experience and professional knowledge make it difficult, said Fang Xingqiu, a student at Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications. Many students end up getting work related to their speciality, but are denied access to a wider world of work.

The survey also showed that 46 per cent of respondents thought it is society s fault for students not undertaking social practice students are just not taken seriously in the workplace.

Universities are aware of the cheating and have taken measures. East China Normal University has adopted a rule allowing students to choose a project to work on by themselves, and apply for funding to carry it out.
