Mooncake prices more reasonable
( 2003-09-05 14:32) (China Daily)

Mooncakes are selling for much more reasonable prices in Guangzhou this year, reports Information Times.

Most mooncakes are priced at around 100 yuan (US$12) a box at area supermarkets, compared to the 300-400 yuan (US$36-48) range last year.

Gift packs costing upwards of 1,000 yuan(US$120), which often include imported wine and even gold bullion to boost their value, are now hard to find.

Many retailers are discounting their products to push sales ahead of the approaching Mid-Autumn Festival (September 11). Some attractively packaged cakes are available for as little as 20 yuan (US$2.40).

But people are being urged to eat fewer mooncakes this year, as they are high in sugar and fat.

According to New Express News, the number of in-patients suffering from "mooncake syndrome" - nausea, digestive problems and constipation - has risen in recent days.
