Woman pleads to see son kept by father
( 2003-09-10 12:32) (China Daily)

A divorced woman who attacked her ex-husband with a knife after being denied visits with her son discovered after serving out her jail term that the man had disappeared with their child.

Guangzhou Daily has published her pleas to be allowed to see her son again.

Yan, a Guangzhou nurse, married Su, a doctor at her hospital, in 1996. Their son was born in 1998.

When the couple divorced in 1999, they agreed that the boy would be raised by Su's parents in Hunan Province where Yan could visit him regularly.

But the Su family made every effort to make her visits awkward, forcing her to sue for custody of the boy in August 2000, Yan said.

She lost the case and her requests to visit were simply ignored. When she complained to her ex-husband, she was told to forget about the child.

The agitated woman stabbed Su with a fruit knife on July 2, 2001 then surrendered herself to police.

After finishing a six-month jail term last June, Yan learned that Su had resigned from the hospital but nobody seemed to know where he'd gone.

Yan has since won a court order giving her the right to visit her son every two weeks. But the ruling is meaningless if Su cannot be found, Yan said.

"I am willing to kneel before him to ask his forgiveness," she pleaded.
