Duck restaurant cooks up evidence
( 2003-09-11 12:40) (China Daily)

A duck restaurant that tried to avoid paying a debt by producing a forged receipt as evidence to the court on Tuesday was ultimately punished twice by being ordered to pay the money owed as well as a 10,000-yuan (US$1,200) fine, reports Beijing Star Daily.

From January 2001 to last May, wholesaler Song Shuying provided Big Duck Restaurant with 28,960-yuan (US$3,500) worth of duck. She has received only 5,000 yuan (US$600) in payment so far. But the restaurant claimed to have paid 35,000 yuan (US$4,230).

The restaurant then produced a receipt stating that Dang Wenhai, an employee of Song, had received 35,000 yuan from the duck restaurant.

But a special test revealed that the receipt was a forgery.

The court ruled that the restaurant should pay Song the outstanding 23,960 yuan (US$2,895) and a fine of 10,000 yuan for fabricating evidence.
