Shanghai Medical Technological Academy welcomed 62-year-old freshman Zou Weimin, a Zhejiang native, on Thursday at the opening ceremony for the new term, Shanghai Evening Post reports.

Zou was invited to deliver a speech at the ceremony on behalf of the school's 1,000 new students.

After taking the National College Entrance Examination in Zhejiang Province, Zou qualified to apply as a science major.

Shanghai Medical Technological Academy enrolled him in its radiology programme as an exception because his passing score was still 30 points below that required by the school.

The school has also arranged a special dormitory for the "grandfather student".
