Almost every door in the village of Datong in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province is covered by red cloth now that a highway is being constructed through the town, reports Today Morning Post.

Villagers told the newspaper they were concerned that the construction work would disturb the earth god and other spirits.

In order to protect themselves from divine rage, they decided to hang red cloth over their doors.

Other villagers said only a small fragment of the population really felt it was necessary.

But they said they had to follow suit upon seeing the doors being covered.
