An artisan shapes a copper bowl over flaming hot coals along a street in Kashgar yesterday in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The oasis city of Kashgar, situated 1,290 metres above sea level, was a key centre for trade along the Silk Road over 1,000 years ago.

A street vendor fans the flames on a grill cooking sticks of lamb in Kashgar. Rearing sheep and eating mutton is an important part of Uygur society, the predominant population of Xinjiang.
