Terrorist bombing activities endanger international security
( 2003-09-18 16:19) (PLA Daily)

From explosion terrorist activities already occurred in the world, we have discovered that their motives are varied from contest of political strength to civil conflicts. There are explosions targeting at leaders of the party, politicians and military leaders so as to overthrow the state regime or bring the country into turbulence and chaos. There are explosions or threats of explosion against some important figures or celebrities in order to reach some political goals. There are explosions at public places to disturb social order and political life, and to undermine social stability. There are explosions on some special occasions just to create a sensational effect. There are explosions engineered by nationalist radicals or religious extremists. There are explosions out of political and military purpose or religious beliefs, and so on.

Secretive and crafty means

The explosion materials that terrorists use are various, from standard to non-standard, from handmade to high-tech products. In 1980s, international terrorists mainly produced and used "car bomb" and "suicide bomber". Since 1990s, terrorists have changed the ignition methods of dynamite or explosion device from detonating with fuse to electric initiation, mechanical initiation and chemical initiation. Some have even used radio remote control, wire circuit remote control, temperature control, light control, sound control initiations and initiation with mechanical timing and chemical timing, to detonate dynamite or explosion device. Now international terrorists have even used and mastered many advanced technologies, such as electronic timing and digital control, computer control and multi-functional detonation system.

Explosion materials have been concealed more craftily. The explosion materials that terrorists use will usually be concealed carefully. For example, they may hide explosion materials in cans, books, mails, packages, boxes and other daily utilities, or make explosion materials by simulating toothpaste, soap, candies, cakes, biscuits, medicine and toys etc., or put detonators and dynamites in bread, fruits, cigarettes and other daily utilities. All the above have added great difficulties for identifying and removing explosion materials.กกกก

Relentless and cruel methods

Terrorists usually bring explosion materials under careful camouflage directly to the pre-selected targets for explosion. Some desperados, armed with explosion materials on their bodies, under the cover of the crowds, detonate explosion materials in railway stations, shopping centers and other public places or important targets. Such suicide explosion terrorist activity, that is, perish together with target, is the so-called "suicide bomber".

Some terrorists plant time bomb in important targets, transport vehicles or luggage. The bomb will explode at scheduled time to reach their goal of destroying the target.

More viciously, some wicked terrorists even plant dynamites in cars, then they drive (or remote control) cars to attack target, thus inflicting a large casualty on innocent people.กก

Worrying trend

Explosion terrorist activities have further intensified. According to relevant statistics, from 1968 to 1976, about 1,200 terrorist activities have occurred worldwide, among which 451 in Western Europe, 217 in Latin America, the rest in Middle East, North America and Asia. In 1980s, explosion terrorist activities were on the increase, and the damage by explosion became more serious. Each year, about 500 explosions on average occurred in each country of Western Europe, and about 2,000 in the United States. In the latest decade, heads of state and government in about 50 countries have been attacked by terrorists. Hundreds and even thousands of explosions take place in France, US, Italy and other countries every year.
