Market blast kills 2 in Kashmir, 6 wounded ( 2003-09-21 16:17) (Agencies)
An explosive hidden inside a video cassette recorder set off a powerful blast
in a busy market in Jammu-Kashmir on Sunday, killing two civilians and wounding
six others, police said.
The VCR, which apparently contained a timed device, had been brought
purportedly for repairs to an electronic shop in Rajauri, one of the towns
worst-affected by 13 years of militancy in Indian-controlled Kashmir, a police
officer at the local control room said on condition of anonymity.
The town is located 180 kilometers (110 miles) northwest of Jammu, the winter
capital of Jammu-Kashmir state.
The shop owner and his assistant were instantly killed. Two of the wounded
were in critical condition, the officer said. The area had been cordoned off by
security forces as they looked for the man who brought the VCR.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion.
