The company, with a total investment of US$1.63 billion, is positioned to target the high-end market, said Zhou Shichang, GSMC's chairman of the board. Its monthly production will reach 10,000 chips by the end of this year. "If everything goes smooth, by the end of 2004, our monthly production of 8-inch wafers will reach 27,000 pieces," said Zhou. According to the public-relation department of GSMC, in the next three years, starting from 2004, the production capacity will double year-on-year. The monthly production capacity of GSMC will amount to 100,000 pieces by the end of 2006. Besides 8-inch wafers, the company plans to produce 12-inch wafers. "We hope we will have the first-class 12-inch line very soon," Zhou said. According to GSMC, the valuable assets of the company are not only the most advanced technologies but the most professional staff. "In only five month, our engineers have developed 0.15 micrometre chips all by themselves," Zhou said. Vice-Mayor Jiang Sixian said GSMC, as one of the largest investment projects in Pudong district, is drawing more IC companies into the area.
