( 2003-09-24 14:14) (China Daily)

The first pet cremation facility in China began operating last Friday, reports Beijing Morning Post.

Jiang Kun, a renowned cross-talk performer and a director of the Beijing Small Animal Protection Association, inaugurated the service.

The ashes of the first animal to be cremated, a stray dog, were placed in a white urn.

According to Zhao Xiaoqing, secretary-general of the Beijing Small Animal Protection Association, cremation fees differ depending on the size of the animal. Charges graduate from 500 yuan (US$60) for small animals to 600 yuan (US$72) for medium-sized pets and 800 yuan (US$96) for large animals.
