A man who lied to police that his girlfriend had run off with 300,000 yuan (US$36,245) of his money wound up earning a 15-day detention for making a false report, according to Beijing Morning Post.

At around 5:00 am on Tuesday, the 40-something man rushed into the Guanwai police station crying that his girlfriend had stolen the money and left him.

Officers on duty were taken aback when he fell to his knees and begged them, with tears in his eyes, to help him get the money back.

But the officers soon spotted inconsistencies in Li's story. Following repeated questioning, Li confessed that he had lied.

After his girlfriend left without saying goodbye, Li wanted the police to find her and bring her back as he hoped to enjoy a comfortable life supported by the woman.
