The Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court sentenced an arsonist to death on Tuesday for setting fire to a residential building and causing two deaths in October 2001, Shanghai Morning Post reports.

Yao Ting's girlfriend broke up with him in September 2001 and refused his efforts to make up with her. After Yao discovered that the woman was living with a new boyfriend, he often ordered food to be sent to the couple's address and once even called a relocation company to the man's flat to "cause friction" between the pair.

But when Yao's schemes failed to break up the new relationship, he set fire to the flat.
