Legislature opens to overseas Chinese ( 2003-09-26 14:35) (China Daily)
Foreigners and residents of Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macao are now being given
the opportunity to sit in on the meetings of the standing committee of the
provincial congress in Henan, reports Dahe Daily.
Some cities, including Beijing, Wuhan and Jilin, welcome Chinese citizens to
listen in on the regular meetings of the local legislature. But Henan is the
first place in the country to invite outsiders to attend their sessions.
According to the measure passed last Monday, investors from Hong Kong, Taiwan
and Macao and foreigners who have been working in Henan for more than one year
may apply to attend the meetings.
No more than 20 domestic and overseas citizens may sit in on a congressional
meeting at any one time.
