Water supply poisoned in central China county
( 2003-10-02 11:12) (Xinhua)

The water supply of Ruyang county in central China's Henan Province was found to have been infected by pesticide on Wednesday morning, according to local police.

Chai Zhanxian, vice director with the local police station, said the initial check indicated that some kind of pesticide had been thrown into the reservoir of the local waterworks but further examination was needed to confirm the exact type.

The samples were sent immediately to the police station at Luoyang city.

At least thirty people went to the hospital before noon, obviously suffering from poisoning, eyewitnesses said, adding that they did not seem to have serious symptoms.

The water facility has been shut and over 9,000 families were affected.

Police are investigating the cause of the poisoning.
