Tennis-Federer flies into Vienna second round
( 2003-10-08 10:28) (Agencies)

Wimbledon champion Roger Federer opened the defence of his Vienna title with an emphatic 6-2 6-2 win over David Ferrer in the first round of the indoor CA Trophy on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Swiss, playing his first ATP match since the US Open in August where he lost in the fourth round, showed no signs of rust as he swept aside his Spanish adversary in less than an hour.

Federer next plays American James Blake or Slovak qualifier Karol Beck.

Already assured of a place in next month's prestigious Masters Cup in Houston, the 22-year-old Federer is now chasing his sixth title of the year and first since Wimbledon.

Third seed Jiri Novak became the 765,000-euro tournament's biggest casualty after losing 6-4 7-6 in the first round to unseeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain.

Czech Novak, a finalist here last year, failed to come to grips with the 22-year-old's serve and made too many unforced errors.

Novak elbowed his way back into the match in the second set, breaking Lopez's serve in the 10th game to level the score.

But the Spaniard refused to buckle, forced a tiebreak and relinquished only three points in the decider to seal victory over a wilting Novak.

"I played very well from the start... was serving well and put a lot of pressure on his game," said Lopez.

"And he just lost his confidence at the end (in the tiebreak)."

Fifth seed Agustin Calleri enjoyed an easy passage into the second round, clinching a 6-4 6-2 win over Mariano Zabaleta in an all-Argentine battle.

The two have played each other three times this year and Calleri has emerged victorious on each occasion.

The 27-year-old Calleri, who won a maiden ATP title at Acapulco in March, plays Max Mirnyi of Belarus or Jan-Michael Gambill of the US in the second round.
