Rush for marriage
( 2003-10-09 09:20) (eastday.com)

The Shanghai Marriage Administration Office said yesterday that 5,442 new couples in the city registered to marry during the National Day holiday, including 69 unions between locals and foreigners.

The registration rush set a record for Shanghai's weekly marriage number, compared with the monthly figure of some 7,000 new couples last year. Eight districts in the city saw their registration tally exceed 300 every day with Pudong New Area witnessing more than 800 daily. Meanwhile, 325 city couples got divorced since the new marriage regulation took effect on October 1.
