The eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi has shut down 2,735 sub-standard
non-coal mines or quarries, or 30 percent of its total non-coal mines in order
to improve safety at mines.
According to the provincial authority in charge of workplace safety, the move
came with the rise of workplace accidents in non- coal mines. In the first seven
months, Jiangxi reported 35 deadly accidents at non-coal mines and 14 people
legally responsible had been prosecuted.
In order to take precautions, the province has invested 100 million yuan (12
