Spurs keep Knicks winless in preseason
( 2003-10-13 16:02) (Agencies)

Keith Van Horn is already getting booed by fans of the winless New York Knicks.

Two of the newest Knicks got different receptions Sunday night as Dikembe Mutombo was cheered and Van Horn was booed in a 85-78 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

"A lot of the East Coast teams, from Philly to Boston to New York, that's just the environment that you play in, so you've got to expect some of it." said Van Horn, who had eight turnovers to go along with eight points and nine rebounds.

Mutombo, signed last Thursday after being waived by New Jersey, was cheered upon making his Knicks debut with 3:38 left in the second quarter. He promptly shot an airball on a hook shot, but made his final two shots and finished with four points, three rebounds and a block.

"Considering that he hadn't played in a while, I thought he did OK," Knicks coach Don Chaney said.

The boos for Van Horn came during a five-minute stretch to begin the third quarter when he traveled, lost the ball out of bounds, committed a foul, had his shot blocked and threw a bad pass.

"New York fans, once he gets his game going they'll cheer for him," Chaney said.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 14 points, getting his final two field goals in the final minute of the third quarter when he successfully challenged Mutombo one-on-one and beat him both times.

San Antonio was playing its second game in two nights after returning from an exhibition game in Paris. But the Spurs shrugged off a slow start and took over by outscoring the Knicks 29-17 in the third quarter to bring a 65-59 lead into the fourth.

New York dropped to 0-4 in exhibition games.

The Spurs had their entire starting lineup available, while the Knicks were without Howard Eisley (strained hamstring), Antonio McDyess and Allan Houston (both recovering from knee surgery). Second-year pro Frank Williams started at point guard for the Knicks and had four points and six assists, shooting 1-for-6.

Chaney said he expects Houston to play in the final two or three preseason games.

Duncan shot 6-for-14 with three assists and two rebounds.
