River levels at lowest in years
( 2003-10-16 11:03) (China Daily)

Experts have called for water-conservation efforts as Guangdong's rivers dropped to the lowest levels in recent years, reports Nanfang Daily.

The major hydrometric stations along the Dongjiang, Beijiang and Xijiang rivers have all reported water levels 2 to 3 centimetres lower than average for recent years.

The water shortage has been attributed to the severe drought in the spring. The province has recorded about 900 millimetres of rainfall since April 15, 36 per cent below the 1,402-millimetre average.

Very little rain is expected later this year as well now that the dry season has begun.
