Foreigners arrested in counterfeit case ( 2003-10-17 15:47) (China Daily)
Two foreigners were arrested at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on
Tuesday on charges of trying to pass fake banknotes, reports Southern Metropolis
News.
The pair, of Canadian and Nigerian nationality respectively, converted six
US$100 bills to renminbi at a currency exchange counter at the airport.
They then used the renminbi to buy two air tickets to Bangkok. But the
currency exchange clerks discovered that the US notes were counterfeit after
they had checked in for their flight.
The two denied the allegation when the clerks identified them in the
departure lounge.
Police arrested the pair after finding 33 US$100 bills, all bearing the same
serial number, on them.
