'Blank' note makes popular wedding gift
( 2003-10-21 13:42) (China Daily)

The "blank" note - a kind of promissory note - is becoming a popular wedding gift in Hohhot, capital of North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, reports Beijing Evening News.

One young woman told the paper that when she attended the wedding ceremony of one of her friends earlier this month, she sent a "blank" note made out for 500 yuan (US$60) as a gift.

"My friend can give the blank note back to me when I get married," she said.

The "blank" note's popularity stems from the fact that it represents good wishes but releases young people facing economic pressures from having to buy expensive gifts for their friends.
