According to the Shanghai Labour and Social Security Bureau, a total of 501,300 residents applied for job-search assistance at the Shanghai Job Replacement Centre in the first nine months of 2003, an increase of 5.6 per cent from last year, Shanghai Labour Daily reports.

And some 168,800 applicants have found jobs with the centre's help so far this year.

Of the more than 100 types of jobs available, most are in the manufacturing industry, the wholesale and retail sectors or real estate.
