Dandong-Inchon container freighters launched
( 2003-10-26 08:11) (Xinhua)

Container freighters between Dandong, northeast China, and Inchon, the Republic of Korea (ROK), were launched Oct. 22, as the Port of Dandong has largely increased its capacity of handling containers in recent years.

Since 1997, containers between two ports have been transported by "The Oriental Pearl," a passenger-cargo liner.

To meet the sharp increase in container shipping, authorities of the Chinese port have invested 5 million yuan (about 600,000 US dollars) to improve the infrastructure and equipment for the opening of the new container freights.

Dandong Port was first opened to foreign vessels in 1907 and since the 1990s, it has experienced a fast expansion. Currently, the port has 11 berths, with the largest berth capable of handling a 50,000 ton-vessel.

Last year, the port handled 8.7 million tons of goods. It has a capacity of handling 200,000 TEUs a year.

The port has opened shipping businesses with over 90 ports of 50 foreign countries and regions.
