Sailor assails cabby, police
( 2003-10-29 17:15) (China Daily)

A sailor from an Italian ship anchored at the Waigaoqiao wharf in Pudong is now prohibited from disembarking at any Chinese port after slapping a taxi driver, attacking a security guard and confronting police on Monday morning, Shanghai Morning Post reports.

At about 2 am on Monday, the drunken man took a taxi from a seaman's club downtown to the Waigaoqiao wharf.

He got out of the taxi without paying the driver. When the driver asked for the fee, the man slapped the cabby across the face.

A security guard at the wharf who tried to calm the drunkard down and convince him to return to his ship was throttled around the neck for his efforts.

The sailor even fought with policemen called to the scene.

The ship has received a verbal warning from the border police.

Meanwhile, the captain of the ship will resign from his post when the vessel arrives in Hong Kong per a decision by the company's headquarters in Italy, said the newspaper.
