'Gambling money does not count'
( 2003-10-29 17:20) (China Daily)

The trial of Zeng Qiji, the former deputy director of the Huadu District accused of accepting 350,000 yuan (US$42,290) in bribes, is under way at the Guangzhou Intermediate Court, reports Southern Metropolis News.

While cruising on Hong Kong's Superstar Leo in May 2000, Zeng allegedly accepted HK$300,000 of "gambling money" from Jiang, who has received favours from Zeng regarding repayment of a bank debt.

Zeng received another HK$30,000 during a visit to some Macao casinos, according to the prosecution.

In court, Zeng refused to admit that the money constituted bribes, claiming that the transactions were only "dealings between friends".
