A man was killed as he tried to effect a truce between a fighting couple. The husband, identified as Xue, escaped afterwards and the wife drank poison in an attempt to commit suicide, reports Information Times.

Xue, a butcher in Zhanjiang, rented a room from the victim.

He got into a quarrel with his wife on the morning of October 22, which led to a fight, said neighbours.

The woman fled to their landlord's home to elude her husband, who chased after her with a knife.

The landlord was killed by Xue as he tried to calm the couple down.

Xue ran off, but his wife swallowed poison.

She was later resuscitated in hospital.
