Soccer-Leverkusen draw to surrender Bundesliga lead
( 2003-11-03 09:21) (Agencies)

Bayer Leverkusen surrendered the lead in the Bundesliga when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Kaiserslautern on Sunday.

The 2002 Champions League finalists drop to second place, a point behind VfB Stuttgart, who moved back to the top with a 4-1 victory over SC Freiburg on Saturday.

Borussia Dortmund recovered from two goals down to beat Hamburg SV 3-2 in Sunday's other Bundesliga game.

The 1997 European champions climb into fourth, a spot above champions Bayern Munich, who slumped to a 2-0 defeat by Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.

Leverkusen, who had won their last four games, suffered in Kaiserslautern in a tight, lively game.

"We were not at our best today," said Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler. "It really could have gone either way but sometimes you have to be satisfied with a draw. I think it's a fair result."

The visitors came close when Brazilian midfielder Robson Ponte hit the post on 49 minutes but Kaiserslautern also had their chances, two second-half efforts by Bulgarian midfielder Marian Hristov needing as many brilliant saves from Leverkusen goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt.

Dortmund, missing 11 injured players, appeared to be heading for another defeat four days after falling to Moenchengladbach in the German Cup.

Goals from defender Bastian Reinhardt and Argentine striker Bernardo Romeo put Hamburg 2-0 ahead of the Ruhr Valley side with 30 minutes to go.

But coach Matthias Sammer's experimental side turned the match around in five minutes with two goals including a penalty from Czech striker Jan Koller quickly followed by the winner, from Brazilian striker Ewerthon.

"We were a bit unlucky to find ourselves trailing 2-0 but the way we fought back was great," said Sammer.

"The injury situation is so bad that the only thing I can do is to give younger players a chance."
