Women saved from human smugglers ( 2003-11-13 17:36) (China Daily) A group of young women whom
smugglers planned to abduct and force into prostitution have been rescued by
police in Shantou, reports Yangcheng Evening News.
More than 80 border police were dispatched to search for the women after
Chaozhou police received a call from one of them saying she had been taken away
on a boat at noon last Friday. Twenty women, including nine who voluntarily went
on the trip, were found at around midnight on a seaside road.
The other 11 said they were lured to Shantou with the promise of jobs, and
the smugglers pretended they were taking them to the sea to enjoy the view
first.
When they realized they were being abducted, the women threatened to jump
into the water to commit suicide, forcing the smugglers to return them to the
land.
Meanwhile, one of the women secretly took a smuggler's cellphone and called
police. Three men and one woman were arrested for organizing human
smuggling.
