7-year odyssey builds China 'earth map'
( 2003-11-13 17:39) (China Daily)

A 52-year-old man spent seven years collecting clumps of earth from around the country to make an "earth map" of China, reports Liaoshen Evening News.

Gu Lipeng, formerly employed by Shenyang Jinbei Automobile Co, decided to make an earth map in 1993 after he heard about the deep affection Song Xilian, a Chinese expatriate who has lived in the United States for many years, still felt for his native land.

Gu spent the next seven years collecting earth from famous and historically significant sites in every province and municipality, including the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the Mazu Temple in Macao and sand from the Nansha Islands.

He has since created a 1:5,000,000 kilometre scale map with the collected soil.

Gu was even able to get soil from Taiwan in November 1999 with the help of others.
