Public apology for road protest plan
( 2003-11-19 16:44) (China Daily)

The homeowners' committee of Fengzhehu Shanzhuang, a residential complex in Shenzhen, apologized in Southern Metro News yesterday for blocking a road as part of a protest on November 10.

According to a city plan, the Nanping Expressway - a road designed to expedite cross-border truck traffic - will pass through the residential complex.

More than 300 residents, fearing major disturbances to their lives by the planned construction, blocked a nearby road on November 10 to protest the "government's arbitrary decision".

Six organizers were taken away by police during the demonstration.

In the published apology, the homeowners' committee members said they regretted the "excessive action, which inconvenienced fellow citizens and the government".

However, the government should have set up legitimate channels through which ordinary people could have their say, they added.
