( 2003-11-24 21:47) (Xinhua)

The Chinese Academy of Sciences ( CAS), China's most prestigious organization for scientific and technological research and development, has recruited 58 new members, to expand its total staff to 688.

Among the 58 newly recruited academicians, 28 are under the age of 60, and the youngest is only 37, said Lu Yongxiang, CAS president, on Monday.

Currently, the average age for all the CAS academicians stands at 72.1, and the number of those younger than 50 is 27, taking up 3.9 percent of the total.

The average age of the new academicians is 1.56 years younger than that of the group recruited two years ago.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences, which was founded in 1949, now has more than 120 research institutes across the country. It recruits new members every two years.
