"Cat in the Hat" continues rule at Thanksgiving weekend box office ( 2003-12-01 10:29) (Xinhua) The Universal Pictures' comedy
"The Cat in the Hat" continued to rule the North American box office in the
competitive Thanksgiving weekend with a take of 25.6 million US dollars,
according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The film, which has grossed 77 million dollars in two weeks, was closely
followed by "The Haunted Mansion," a Walt Disney Pictures release which earned
25.3 million dollars.
Earlier in the day, Universal Pictures reported a three-day sum of 24.7
million dollars for "The Cat in the Hat," but it later said a junior employee
accidentally gave out the wrong figure to news media and box office analysts.
The Christmas comedy hit "Elf," released by New Line Cinema, held steady at
No. 3 with 22.2 million dollars, bringing its four- week gross to 130.1 million
dollars.
"Elf" is the 24th movie released in 2003 to top 100 million dollars, tying
last year's record of 24 films over that mark.
Rounding out the Top Five were "Gothika," which earned 18.2 million dollars,
and Russell Crowe's "Master and Commander"The 12 top films over the weekend
earned 209.5 million dollars from Wednesday to Sunday, 8.6 percent more than the
192.9 million dollars grossed by the top dozen movies during the same period
last year.
