Kidnapping claim to save husband
( 2003-12-04 17:04) (China Daily)

In attempt to exonerate her husband, a woman told police their baby had been kidnapped, even though the eight-month-old was actually safe at a relative's home, reports Yangcheng Evening News.

Wu Guilan's husband, Zhu Wenqiang got into a fight with a shopkeeper after drinking too much and was taken to the Tonghe Street Police Substation in the Baiyun District on November 29.

After being released, the vengeful Zhu visited the shopkeeper late one night with his brother and was arrested a second time.

Wu hurried to the police substation afterwards, attributing her husband's actions to "a mysterious attack by strangers that evening".

The assailants also took their baby by force, Wu claimed.

A police investigation, however, found the baby safe and sound at Wu's sister-in-law's home.

Wu admitted having lied to police, saying she became overly anxious after finding out her injured husband was in police custody.
