Matchmaking project aids poor single mums ( 2003-12-04 17:04) (China Daily) The women's federation of
Guangzhou has launched a matchmaking project to help low-income single mothers,
reports New Express News.
The federation has registered 3,709 low-income single mums, about 45 per cent
of whom are widowed.
More than 80 per cent earn less than 450 yuan (US$54) a month and nearly 10
per cent have almost no steady income. The project - "Loving Hearts Hand in
Hand" - aims to boost these women's prospects of finding new husbands while
helping screen the candidates, said Li, an official with the federation.
"Single mothers earning little money often suffer from low self-esteem,
hampering their chances of remarrying," she added. Meanwhile, the women's
federation is recruiting volunteers to act as father figures for some 6,000
children of the single mothers.
The federation has received more than 100 calls expressing interest in making
donations or meeting the mothers since the project was launched on November
30.
