Police arrest fake Xinhua reporter
( 2003-12-09 11:13) (Xinhua)

A jobless man who disguised himself as a Xinhua News Agency reporter has been arrested by local police in Zunhua City, Hebei Province, north China.

The police chased the man for a year, since they were informed of the fraudulent activities of Shangguan Zhongde, from Zunyi City of Guizhou Province in southwest China.

The man earned 110,000 (about 13,250 US dollars) from someone who wanted to study at an academy of the Chinese People's Armed Police, by claiming he was a Xinhua reporter and was able to offer assistance.

In China, there have been frequent reports about criminals who have profited by pretending to be journalists. Top media organizations like Xinhua, People's Daily and China Central Television are often the target of such cases.
