A man in Zhanjiang in western Guangdong Province chopped off his index finger over the weekend to make his wife happy, reports Guangzhou Daily.

The incident took place on Sunday morning after Zhang, 40, returned home and began quarrelling with his wife.

Zhang, a chronic gambler, had spent the entire previous night playing games of chance and losing all of his money in the process.

Zhang's distraught wife threatened him with divorce.

To show his determination to quit gambling and save his family, Zhang chopped off his right index finger with a kitchen knife.

Zhang has lost his right index finger forever. But his wife was deeply moved by his determination to stop squandering money and promised to stand by him.
