HEBEI Factory drives farmer to suicide
( 2003-12-11 17:15) (China Daily)

A farmer from Qian'an City in North China's Hebei Province committed suicide after he could no longer bear the noise generated by a factory near his home, reports Beijing Daily.

He, the victim's neighbour, opened a small beverage plant in his courtyard in the early 1990s.

Farmer Wan Tianlin tried to reason with He several times as he was often kept awake at night by factory noise.

After being subjected to the racket for so many years, Wan eventually developed a nervous condition and had to give up working in 2001.

Wan committed suicide on August 1, 2001. His family later took He to court.

A court has ruled that He must pay Wan's family 13,495 yuan (US$1,630).
