Luck runs out on lucky phone numbers
( 2003-12-11 17:15) (China Daily)

A company in Beihai City has sued a local telecom carrier after two lucky mobile phone numbers it paid 640,000 yuan (US$77,325) for were discontinued, reports Xinhua News Agency.

The New Asia Property Management Co won the right to use the numbers, which ended with the auspicious digits 908798 and 901888, in perpetuity at an auction held by the mobile telecom carrier in 1993.

But the carrier discontinued service for the numbers at the end of 2001, when its network was upgraded to a digital system.

The company's lawyer said the loss of the two lucky numbers - considered valuable intangible assets by the company - had cost the firm a great deal of business.

The firm is asking for compensation equalling 576,000 yuan (US$69,600), 90 per cent of what the company paid for the numbers.
