Luxury toilet scheme under fire
( 2003-12-12 17:17) (China Daily)

Deputies of the Guangzhou Municipal People's Congress on Wednesday strongly criticized the local environmental sanitation bureau for constructing several "luxurious public toilets" to help raise the city's profile, reports Information Times.

Tang Xiaoping, a local deputy, called the expensive toilets a waste of money.

Each toilet is equipped with imported fixtures costing more than 1 million yuan (US$120,000).

The public toilet shortage is still a problem in Guangzhou, and the city urgently needs to build more practical toilets to serve both local residents and tourists, Tang said.

And many local residents, particularly the elderly, have trouble figuring out how to use the toilets.

As a result, many fixtures have been damaged since the toilets opened for service.
