Major cotton grower sets production target for 2004 ( 2003-12-16 16:52) (Xinhua) The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous
Region, China's leading cotton producer, has set cotton productiontargets for
2004.
Zhang Qingli, commander-in-chief of the Production and Construction Corps in
Xinjiang, said the corps plans to set the acreage under cotton at 446,600 ha for
2004, a level similar to the previous two years, despite rising cotton prices.
The corps should rely on technology and better management instead of
increasing the acreage under cotton, said Zhang.
The corps has forecast it will harvest 782,700 tons of cotton this year,
close to the total of 800,000 tons for last year.
Officials with Agriculture Bureau said the acreage under cottonthis year was
close to 453,300 ha, 13,300 ha more than last year.
Xinjiang is the biggest producer of quality cotton in
China.
