Professor shelters deserted pets
( 2003-12-17 17:14) (China Daily)

Some people have been deserting their pets on the streets. Now a retired professor of Beijing-based Renmin University is endeavouring to provide shelters for the abandoned creatures, Beijing Evening News reports.

Professor Lu Di has made her 80- square-metre house the home of more than 40 small animals including monkeys, cats and dogs.

Lu began to take in the forlorn animals from the streets 30 years ago and she spent all her pension on food and medical expenses for her adopted animals.

She said that since great importance has been attached to environmental protection nowadays, human beings should care for animals rather than abuse or dessert them. People should coexist with animals peacefully, she added. Man caught for a fake blast

A man who attempted to stir panic by pretending that he would blow up a bomb at an information market near Fuxing Road in Haidian District was caught on Monday, reports Xinhuanet.com.

Li Jun, from Northeast China's Jilin Province, brought a bag of sand-made "explosive", and threatened to ignite a big explosion. Acting on a tip-off, the police caught the man in 15 minutes.

Under questioning, Li confessed that he suffered an economic loss two years ago due to his mistaken belief in a television advertisement; and several days ago he saw a similar commercial on TV again so he dreamt the scheme to ease his anger. Police are still conducting further investigation.
