Coach Nelson misses Mavs' game with flu ( 2003-12-21 10:12) (Agencies) Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson missed Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers because of the flu.
Nelson's son and top assistant, Donnie, took over bench duties, with the help of No. 2 assistant Del Harris.
Nelson is the second-winningest coach in NBA history, having passed Pat Riley on Monday night when the Mavericks beat the Toronto Raptors 111-94. The 1,111th victory of his 26-year career came in his 3,000th NBA game as a player or coach.
Donnie Nelson started the night 15-8 as a head coach, having gone 13-8 while his father was recovering from prostate cancer surgery during the 2000-2001 season and 2-0 in 2001-2002.
The Mavericks also were without swingman Michael Finley (sprained toe) and center Shawn Bradley (back spasms).
