Monument to be erected at blowout accident site
( 2004-01-11 09:27) (Xinhua)

A monument to the victims of a gas blowout in Kaixian County in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality will be erected at the accident site, according to local officials.

Speaking at a meeting on the reconstruction of the blowout- affected areas, Chen Yuanhui, deputy secretary of the county committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said that the monument will be set up not only to mourn those who lost their lives in the disaster but also to remind the survivors of the importance of work safety.

A natural gas well operated by the China National Petroleum Corporation in Kaixian County blew out on Dec. 23, leaving 243 people dead, most of whom were local residents.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow villagers, Zhang Shigao from the blowout-affected Huangpo Village of Gaoqiao Township, told the meeting that the villagers were confident about rebuilding their homes.

By Saturday afternoon, most of the 3,755 families affected by the blowout had been compensated for their property losses.

To guarantee the fairness of the compensation and avoid corruption, all compensation information was publicized in the villages, according to county officials.
