    The San Diego Zoo unvieled the name of its 4-month old male giant panda cub Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, in San Diego. His name is Mei Sheng, which translates into 'Born in the USA.' The cub's name, a closely held secret, was suggested by the Zoo's Giant Panda Conservation Team and approved by the China Wildlife Conservation Association. Mei Sheng is the second giant panda cub born at the San Diego Zoo and the first in the Western Hemisphere since 1999. [AP]

    A six-year-old panther mum called Xixi stares at visitors with her cubs lying besides her, August 19, 2003 at Xi'an Zoo in Northwest China's Shannxi Province. Xixi gave birth to the two cubs, one male and the other female, on July 4 after a 94-day pregnancy. On August 4, a 12-year-old panther mum gave birth to another two, whose gender has yet to be determined, in the zoo.
