Real Madrid moved a step closer to the semi-finals of the Champions League when they beat Monaco 4-2 in a pulsating match at the Bernabeu.

The first half saw Madrid miss a host of chances after Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane consistently sent in brilliant crosses, which were met with less than brilliant headers.

Raul (twice), Ivan Helguera and Ronaldo were all guilty of bad misses with the Brazilian somehow contriving to miss unmarked from five yards out. Indeed the closest Madrid came was when Zidane hit the base of a post with a snap shot.

Madrid were made to pay for their profligacy when Sebastian Squillaci gave Monaco the lead by stabbing home from close range.

The second half saw the hosts pull level with a scrappy goal as Helguera bundled a Beckham corner home.

Madrid took the lead when Flavio Roma could not hold onto a shot from Figo and Zidane was well placed to tuck away the rebound.

Ronaldo earned Madrid a penalty when Squillaci scythed him down in the 76th minute. Figo missed the spot-kick but reacted quickest to head the hosts into a 3-1 lead.

In the 81st minute Ronaldo's clinical finish made it 4-1 but just two minutes later Fernando Morientes gave Monaco hope by heading home Plasil's excellent cross.

David Beckham picked up a yellow card in the final moments and will miss the second leg due to suspension.
