Chinese woman sprinter Li Xuemei left Chengdu Sunday to compete in the IAAF Grand Prix slated on May 8 in Osaka, Japan, her first time in international meets after an absence of two years due to injuries.

Coach Zhang Rongwei explained that Li hopes to run within 11.30 seconds in the women's 100 meters to qualify for the Athens Olympic Games, as well as to reach the top 16 in the women's 4x100m relay.

Ten days ago, Li reached the Olympic B standard of 11.40 seconds in a domestic meet in Guilin, Guangxi province.

"Li is expected to run faster and better as she is recovering from her injuries," said coach Zhang.

The 27-year-old sprinter is known as the Chinese flying woman as she has dominated the 100m races in the most populous country.

She timed in 11.05 seconds to take the women's 100m title at the national athletics championships in June, 1997, and set an Asian mark of 10.79 seconds in the 8th National Games in October, 1997. In both meets, she also triumphed in the 200m races, including an Asian mark of 22.01 seconds.

In an international meet in Switzerland, she times in 11.19 seconds to finish second in the women's 100m in July, 1998, and took the Asian Games title in 11.05 in Bangkok in December, 1998.

Since then, she has remained unbeaten in China before she had been sidelined for two years due to series of injuries.
